In solidarity with protests to defend Black lives

NIJC stands in solidarity with communities of color who for generations have sought to have their voices heard in the face of racism and injustice. We believe that Black lives matter and that to achieve peace, we must uphold justice for all of our communities. Read our statement.

NIJC joined The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and 420+ organizations in demanding legislative action in response to ongoing fatal police killings and other violence against Black people across our country. We also joined 400+ immigrant justice organizations in a solidarity letter in support of Black communities in the U.S.

Virtual Human Rights Awards inspires viewers around the world

On June 2nd at NIJC's first-ever virtual Human Rights Awards, prominent activists, critically acclaimed authors, and community leaders all came together to celebrate the accomplishments of those fighting for human rights and join the chorus of calls for justice for all. We awarded Ankura with the Human Rights Corporate Award for providing critical analysis and expert testimony in a class action lawsuit and Munger, Tolles, and Olson LLP with the Human Rights Practitioner Award for routinely providing outstanding pro bono representation to immigrants. We heard powerful remarks from keynote speaker Aarti Shahani, the legendary Dolores Huerta, and courageous immigrants and asylum seekers, and saw a moving performance from the Albany Park Theater Project. Watch a recording of the livestream now.

He was only released after NIJC sued for his release amid COVID-19. Johannes shared his story at the Human Rights Awards and during a Congressional virtual forum. See Johannes' story.

NIJC staff join Congress to discuss COVID-19's impact on immigrant families

Many immigrant families have been excluded from COVID-19 relief. NIJC's Julián Lazalde spoke alongside members of Congress about how this harms families, including our client Naomi. Watch Julián starting at 14:55. Thanks to U.S. Representatives Chuy García, Robin Kelly, Mike Quigley, and State Senator Celina Villanueva for calling attention to this important issue.

The insidious and deceptive reasoning behind closing the border

The Trump administration has extended indefinitely its closure of the border under the false claim of protecting public health. Watch NIJC's recent event, False Friction: Reconciling COVID-19 and Immigrants' Rights, talking about the false reasoning for closing the border and how it seriously harms immigrants and asylum seekers.

Closing the border under the guise of public health was a long-standing project of the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant agenda long before the COVID-19 global pandemic. Newly released government data reveals the devastating collapse of the U.S. asylum system before and during COVID-19.
