Donald Trump’s threat to revoke the nonprofit status of institutions like Harvard University and environmental groups working to save the planet from climate chaos is not an attack any of us can ignore.
These gestures are a blueprint for how Trump could effectively crush any nonprofit that dares to oppose him or his policies — including nonprofit news outlets like Common Dreams.
This idea of revoking the tax-exempt status of organizations that refuse to bow to Trump is not new. Last year, the House of Representatives twice passed legislation that would have given this authority to the incoming Trump administration.
But now Trump isn’t waiting for Congress to pass a law. He simply installed MAGA stooges the key agencies and sent them after Harvard as his first target. It won’t be the last, and Common Dreams must be prepared for him to come after us as well.
Let’s be clear about one thing: We will not under any circumstances capitulate to Trump. If he comes at us, we’ll fight him to the bitter end. And we know that you — the Common Drams community — will have our back.
