While the eyes of the world are understandably on Gaza, horrific settler violence in the West Bank is also intensifying, with settlers storming villages and Palestinians under tremendous pressure to leave their homes to keep their families safe. The Israeli government’s moves towards annexation have unleashed Minister of Occupation Smotrich and his colleague, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and they are giving settlers license to ramp up the violence, the fires, the rocks, the guns – and try to force the Palestinians out. Shalom Achshav and its Settlement Watch project are on the front lines of this battle, working every day to stamp out the violence and protect the Palestinian residents of the West Bank from encroaching settlers and settlements. Our friends there stand tall and bravely as the line between order and chaos, between peace and utter disruption and violence. But they are facing enormous challenges – from Netanyahu and his government and from their efforts to undermine the funding of this essential work.
