Team, Trump’s attacks on Harvard University is only the latest step in his authoritarian agenda of scaring institutions into silence.

There are many issues to tackle in higher education — from the skyrocketing cost of tuition to improving pathways to lifelong careers — but Trump isn’t interested in addressing those.

No, this is a political attack against an institution that he sees as an ideological enemy. And throughout history, dictators and authoritarians have used their power to go after educational institutions because they are hubs for free speech, the sharing of ideas, and organized dissent.

Harvard is a critical piece of Massachusetts’s legacy as a leader in education and a huge contributor to our economy through jobs, research, technology, and more.

And beyond Harvard, Trump has opened investigations into dozens more colleges along with threatening their funding. He’s using the power of the federal government to try to shape higher education in his personal image. We can’t let him.
