Eight states are considering bills that would treat abortion as homicide. This is not a joke.
Here’s what we know: According to the 19th News, in Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas, bills have been introduced to treat abortion as a homicide and impose criminal penalties on both the providers and the patients. These bills stem from the Prenatal Equal Protection Act, a model legislation designed by a Texas-based advocacy group called the Foundation to Abolish Abortion.
According to Time Magazine, in Oklahoma, the bill proposed to directly reclassify the state’s definition of homicide to include “unborn children.” The bill in South Carolina will “protect the lives of preborn persons with the same criminal and civil law protecting the lives of born persons.”
Additionally, these bills attack IVF, access to abortion pills, and anything that may “direct, advise, encourage, or solicit” an abortion.
This is what we mean when we say that it is CRITICAL that we enshrine abortion access into our state constitution – to ensure our rights are not vulnerable to shifting political landscapes and the whims of elected officials who want to eliminate abortion access.
