Dear John,

Yesterday I joined the Move Oregon coalition and a hundred advocates in the Oregon State Capitol [[link removed]] to rally for a safety first, climate forward, and accountable transportation package. Oregonians deserve an equitable transportation system that’s accessible, multimodal, climate-forward, and safe. Access to public transportation is a life-changer: resulting in cleaner air, higher public safety, access to physical activity, and healthier and more vibrant communities.

Lawmakers are currently considering how we fund our transportation system, so we spent the day in the Capitol yesterday, advocating for transportation funding that delivers on our safety and climate goals while expanding financially sustainable and well-maintained transportation choices. Despite the support we’ve seen for this package, we know this legislation will be hard to pass. Will you send your legislators a message in support of safe, climate-forward, and accessible transportation [[link removed]]?

All Oregonians deserve clean air, healthy, vibrant communities, and a chance to thrive. As Indi Namkoong, Verde’s transportation justice coordinator, stated on the steps of the Capitol yesterday: “We’ve been ready for a transportation system that offers us real choices. We want the system to be safe, sustainable, well maintained and resilient to the challenges of the future.”

The opposition we’ve seen to the framework [[link removed]] that was released in early April, is related to the tax increases that will come with the passage of this transportation package. However, as we’re ready to support funding ideas that reflect our values, we also want to assure that they are fair and don’t add to the burden working people already face.

We need a system that works for everyone and is fair - which is exactly what we are advocating for - and we need it now. If we don’t pass this transportation package now, critical programs will lose funding, meaning Oregonians will continue to face record injuries and deaths because they lack safe routes, drivers will face unsafe road conditions, and public transit will be unreliable.

Now is our opportunity to pass a life-changing package for Oregonians. It’s time to create a world where every Oregonian has clean air, healthy, vibrant communities, and the chance to thrive. Oregonians deserve change and an accessible transportation system that works for everyone, now. Urge your legislators to support a transportation package that reflects our values today [[link removed]]!
