Dear friend,
Something extraordinary just happened—and we want to make sure you’re fully in the loop.
The FDA has released a sweeping roadmap to phase out animal testing in drug development, signaling a dramatic shift away from outdated practices that have dominated science for nearly a century. This announcement from newly confirmed FDA Commissioner Marty Makary is a direct result of our work on Capitol Hill to eliminate an animal-testing mandate and to point to a much more reliable, effective, and less costly drug screening process grounded on innovative, human-biology-based methods.
To unpack what this means for animals, patients, and the future of medicine, we recently hosted a virtual town hall with our subject experts and two biotech leaders.

It was my greatest hope that after we led the way to pass the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 in December 2022, the FDA would pick up the baton and run with it. That’s exactly what Dr. Makary is doing, and we are immensely grateful to him.
It's an aggressive plan he’s initiating:
- Facilitating qualification and validation of non-animal test methods and urging major pharmaceutical companies to use them in their drug screening work.
- Streamlining drug development and setting timelines for using more predictive human-relevant tools.
- Committing to a new model grounded on humane principles that also will save patients by delivering better, more reliable treatments and cures for illnesses.
In our town hall, you’ll hear from key figures who break down how this change came about, what technologies are leading the way—like organ-on-chip systems—and how we, as a community of advocates, researchers, and concerned citizens, can help guide this shift to ensure it lives up to its potential.
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to leave behind failed methods and embrace a future that’s both ethical and effective.
