We cannot afford the status quo leadership of the past 50 years.

On the debate stage last night, I had one clear message for the people of Massachusetts: We cannot afford the status quo leadership of the past 50 years.

Now is not the time for more of the same.

Now is not the time for ordinary leadership.

Now is not the time to “return to normal.”

Because normal is broken. Normal saw 100,000 lives lost to COVID-19. Normal is 40 million Americans out of work. Normal is a country that — despite its riches — sees hunger and poverty and homelessness at excruciating rates. Normal is racism and white supremacy alive and well, generation after generation.

I’m running for Senate because we need a change. We need stronger leadership in the U.S. Senate, to move on from the failed policies of the past and build something better for the future.

We will not meet this moment with the same leaders that gave us the last 50 years.

Ed Markey doesn’t have a good response to that. He doesn’t have a good response to why he voted for the Iraq War. Why he voted for the bill that created our mass incarceration crisis, quadrupled funding for prisons, and expanded the federal death penalty. Why — at one of the last seminal civil rights moments in our history — he actually opposed the desegregation of Boston’s schools.

He doesn’t have the answers, so he has resorted to angrily attacking me.

Massachusetts deserves better. The work ahead is the fight of a generation. And we won’t get through it by just accepting the status quo.

Together, we can reject the failed policies and politicians of the past. We can break down the old way of doing things that left too many people divided, disillusioned, oppressed, excluded, and afraid.

I'm all in, and I hope you are too.
