Right now, the Trump administration is using the power of the federal government to punish a university — not because it broke the law, but because it refused to comply with a political agenda.
The IRS is now threatening Harvard’s tax-exempt status after the university refused to implement sweeping political directives pushed by the administration — directives that would undermine the university’s autonomy and core academic values.
Let’s be clear: this is a direct assault on the First Amendment and on the independence of American institutions.
As Harvard’s president put it, the university “will not surrender its independence or its constitutional rights.” That shouldn’t be controversial — and yet this administration is treating it as grounds for federal retaliation.
This moment is about more than one school. It’s about how far Trump is willing to go to undermine free expression, due process, and the right to dissent. It’s a warning to any institution — or individual — that refuses to fall in line.
As a Member of Congress and DCCC Frontline Co-Chair, I’m working to protect our democracy from this kind of overreach — but we need to take back the House to hold this administration accountable.
We don’t have to agree with everything any one institution says or does — but we should all agree that no president should use the IRS to punish dissent.
Thanks for standing with me in this fight.
Be well,
Dr. Ami Bera
