Hey John,
Earth Day was never meant to be just a hashtag.
It began as a revolt—a generation taking to the streets in the 1970s to say, "You cannot poison our futures for profit." And it worked. We won legislation and regulations that kept our air breathable, our water drinkable, and corporations in check.
But now?
Earth Day has been co-opted.
Politicians recycle broken promises.
Corporations reuse the same “eco-friendly” performative slogans.
Billionaires reduce their tax rates, not their emissions.
Today, oil companies are breaking profit records while our planet breaks heat records. Trump and Elon Musk are gutting the regulations that stand between us and disaster.
The billionaires and the oligarchs are taking everything.
Earth Day started because corporations could spew toxic chemicals into our air and dump toxic waste into our water. There was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment.
That’s what Donald Trump wants to return us to.
This Earth Day, we’re going back to its roots, then showing up on May Day, too, because a real Green New Deal means climate and labor united.
There will be no safe future for our generation unless we build a mass movement to beat back fascism, dismantle corporate rule, and build a world where we all thrive.
That’s why this Earth Day, we’re organizing to build the power to build something better, and that starts with fighting back against the billionaires and corporations that are slowly poisoning our futures.
The people who profit from our suffering are hoping we burn out. Let’s make sure they’re the ones feeling the heat.
In Solidarity,
Team Sunrise
