Neighbors,

Over the past week, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with residents and community leaders across the District at several key events — including the WDCEP Annual Meeting, the DC Chamber’s Small Business Summit, and the RFK Day of Play. Each of these gatherings reflected the spirit of our city — innovative, resilient, and rooted in community.

As Council recess ends this week, we’re preparing to return to legislative work with a Committee of the Whole meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 22. My team and I have stayed active throughout the break, continuing to listen, engage, and advocate for the needs of residents across all eight wards.

And I’m not slowing down — I’ll be hosting a Ward 8 Town Hall on Monday, April 22 at 6:00 PM at The Temple of Praise (700 Southern Ave SE). I invite you to join me to share your budget priorities, ask questions, and stay informed about what’s happening in your community. Your voice matters — and I hope to see you there.

Let’s keep pushing forward — together.

In service,

Jordan Brand Classic Returns to D.C.

I'm proud to share that today, April 18, 2025, the Jordan Brand Classic returns to Washington, D.C., at the CareFirst Arena in Congress Heights. This premier high school basketball showcase, which began in D.C. 23 years ago, brings together the nation's top young talent in a celebration of athletic excellence and community spirit.

The event features both girls' and boys' games, highlighting future stars of the sport. It's more than just a game; it's a testament to D.C.'s rich basketball heritage and our ongoing commitment to youth development and community engagement.

Let's celebrate the return of this iconic event to our city and support the next generation of basketball talent.

Prior to the games, the DC Tip-Off Community Experience offers free festivities from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Sycamore & Oak, adjacent to the arena. Enjoy food, music, art, and activities for all ages, including appearances by the iconic Hoop Bus.

RFK Day of Play: Celebrating Community, Youth, and Family Fun

On Wednesday April 16, I had the pleasure of kicking off the RFK Day of Play by throwing the first pitch in a spirited kickball game with my colleague, Councilmember Felder. This annual event, hosted by Events DC and led by Angie Gates, is a free, family-friendly celebration held during DC Public Schools’ spring break, designed to bring our community together through movement, play, and connection.

The Fields at RFK Campus were alive with energy as families enjoyed a variety of organized sports and activities. Local food vendors generously provided complimentary meals, ensuring everyone was well-fed and happy. Live entertainment added to the festive atmosphere, making it a day to remember for attendees of all ages.

Adding to the excitement, the Washington Commanders' mascot, Major Tuddy, made a special appearance, bringing smiles to fans of all ages and showcasing the team’s commitment to community engagement.

Events like the RFK Day of Play exemplify the vibrant spirit of our city. I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this event a success and look forward to many more opportunities to come together in celebration and unity.
Speaking at the 2025 DC Chamber Small Business Summit & Expo

On Tuesday, April 15, I had the honor of addressing the 2025 DC Chamber Small Business Summit & Expo: “Business Resiliency During Uncertain Times” at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

This annual summit is more than just an event — it’s a cornerstone for small business empowerment in our city. It brings together entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and policymakers for a day of panels, workshops, and networking, all focused on giving small businesses the tools and connections they need to thrive.

As someone who has long championed small business development, I know how vital these enterprises are to the economic health and cultural fabric of Washington, DC. From creating jobs to shaping vibrant neighborhoods, small businesses are at the heart of what makes our city strong and resilient.

I’m proud to support efforts that provide our business community with real, actionable strategies — especially during times of uncertainty — and I remain committed to ensuring that DC remains a place where businesses can grow, succeed, and stay rooted in the communities they serve.
Highlighting the Power of Sports at the WDCEP Annual Meeting

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Washington DC Economic Partnership’s Annual Meeting — a signature event that brings together civic leaders, developers, and business stakeholders to talk about the future of economic development in our city.

As Chair of the Council’s Committee on Business and Economic Development, I emphasized the importance of building an economy that works for everyone. One of the key ways we’re doing that is by recognizing sports as more than just entertainment — they’re a driver of jobs, tourism, and community pride.

We have a real opportunity to harness that momentum. From the transformation of neighborhoods like Navy Yard and Buzzard Point to the potential return of the Washington Commanders to RFK, sports continue to shape the physical and economic landscape of DC. And we’re taking bold steps to ensure that this growth is inclusive and citywide.

I’m especially excited about the 2025 Jordan Brand Classic happening today at CareFirst Arena — an event that will spotlight youth talent and bring a welcome economic boost to local businesses.

We’re building a future where residents in every ward feel the benefits of investment, where young people see sports as a path to opportunity, and where DC remains a premier destination for major events. I look forward to continuing this work together — thoughtfully, equitably, and with a vision for the long term.
Team McDuffie at the Rosedale Spring Fling

On April 17, Team McDuffie tabled at the annual Rosedale Spring Fling at the Rosedale Recreation Center Field. This vibrant community event brought together families and neighbors during DCPS Spring Break for an afternoon of food, entertainment, and fun.

We were proud to join a row of organizations sharing resources and information with the Rosedale community in Ward 7, helping create a welcoming and safe space for families to connect, play, and engage.
Team McDuffie in Ward 7

Team McDuffie recently tabled on the 3900 block of Minnesota Ave NE in Ward 7, where we joined various District agencies including the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) and DC Fire and EMS to connect with residents and share important community resources.

We were also proud to stand alongside ANC Commissioner Ruff, engaging with neighbors, listening to concerns, and making sure residents had access to the tools and information they need to thrive. It’s always a privilege to be out in the community, working together to build a safer, stronger Ward 7.
Department of Behavioral Health - Substance Use and Disorder Assessment and Referral Sites

Access Comprehensive Substance Use Treatment Services in DC

The DC Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) offers a wide range of substance use treatment services tailored to meet individual needs. These services include detoxification, medication-assisted treatment, individual and group counseling, self-help and recovery activities, and, in some cases, residential treatment. Certain residential programs even allow women to bring their children under 10 years old to live with them during treatment.

To access these services, individuals can visit an Assessment and Referral site without an appointment or call to schedule one. Qualified clinicians will conduct an assessment covering the nature of the addiction, use history, mental health needs, and overall health status. Based on this assessment, individuals can choose from a list of certified providers offering treatment tailored to their personal experiences and life circumstances.

Priority referrals are available for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, pregnant women, and women with children. Language and sign language interpretation services are also available to assist individuals with limited or no English proficiency.

For more information, contact the Access HelpLine at 1-888-793-4357.

Roaming Rooster

🍗 Small Business Spotlight: Roaming Rooster

This week, we’re proud to highlight Roaming Rooster, a beloved D.C. success story that began as a single food truck in 2015 and has grown into a thriving local chain. Founded by brothers Michael and Biniyam Habtemariam, along with Hareg Mesfin, Roaming Rooster is known for its commitment to quality ingredients, bold flavor, and community engagement.

Their menu features free-range, antibiotic-free, and halal fried chicken, with fan favorites like the OG Nashville, Honey Butter, and The Club sandwiches — all available in heat levels from mild to extra hot. They also offer wings, tenders, and vegetarian options, making sure there’s something for everyone.

Today, Roaming Rooster has expanded across the District with several brick-and-mortar locations and even a presence at Nationals Park, serving up comfort food with a purpose.

We’re proud to uplift businesses like Roaming Rooster that not only serve great food, but also reflect the entrepreneurial spirit and flavor of D.C.
