When the freedom to vote is under attack, this team steps up. Here’s a recent example:
All the way through the final days of Georgia’s most recent legislative session, some lawmakers kept attempting to pass egregious anti-voter bills.
They were trying to ban Georgians from dropping off mail ballots over the weekend before Election Day.
They were trying to allow cuts to Saturday early voting for certain local elections.
They were trying to give unelected State Election Board members more control over who stays on the voter rolls.
And they were trying to enshrine policies that bipartisan elections experts have called out as harmful, like mandated video surveillance of absentee ballot drop boxes and expanded partisan poll watcher access to sensitive areas in elections offices.
But with your support, this team fought back — and NONE of those anti-voter provisions passed the General Assembly.
In close coordination with a pro-voting rights coalition — with near-daily in-person check-ins and strategy sessions at the Capitol — we tracked the very latest elections legislation.
We equipped partners and allies with analyses and resources that helped make the case against anti-voter bills.
We lobbied legislators to stop or mitigate the damage of extreme proposals.
We drove a public advocacy and education campaign that included a grassroots lobby day at the Capitol with university students, community volunteers, and voting rights supporters.
We mobilized constituents to call the offices of key legislators.
We raised the alarm online and behind the scenes.
And we helped prevent these bills from passing.
Now that the General Assembly is set to be out of session for the rest of the year, the Atlanta Journal Constitution noted this “marks the first year since Donald Trump’s narrow loss in 2020” when lawmakers “haven’t changed state election laws.”
Of course, we can’t forget the anti-voter bills that did pass in recent years, from SB 202 in 2021 to SB 189 last year.
New Georgia laws have made mass voter purges easier, imposed burdensome voter ID requirements, criminalized handing out food and water to voters in line, and placed unnecessary limits on ballot drop boxes.
They represent key planks of a comprehensive agenda to silence the will of the people, because some politicians are so scared of losing power that they’re willing to smother our democracy.
We have to keep pressing forward to secure equal access to the ballot box for all voters. The attacks will keep on coming — but this team will be ready to fight back. And it’s because of activists like you. Thank you, friend, for everything you do as a member of this pro-voter movement.
With deep gratitude,
The Fair Fight Action Team
