The woman was found stabbed to death in a hotel bathroom two days later. Rogers received another death sentence in California in 1999. He met Sandra Gallagher at a Van Nuys, California, bar in September 1995. Her badly burned corpse was found in her truck a day later near Rogers' apartment. Rogers is also suspected in several other homicides throughout the United States. Three other executions have taken place in Florida this year, with a fourth upcoming May 1, all by lethal injection. ABC News Police arrest man seen on video hitting dog with metal chain inside DTLA apartment building A man seen on surveillance video hitting and apparently abusing a dog in downtown L.A. last month has been arrested. Video shared with Eyewitness News shows multiple instances of alleged abuse happening in an apartment building hallway on South Spring Street. The man could be seen hitting the dog multiple times with a metal chain in one of the disturbing videos. The L.A. District Attorney's Office filed one count of felony animal cruelty against 40-year-old Donald Jeffes in the case. New details reveal the dog in the video's name is Rusty, and he's a 5-year-old bulldog. When officers served the arrest warrant on Thursday, they said there was no evidence that Rusty was still at the address. Further details about the dog's current whereabouts were not immediately known. Jeffes is being held in jail on a $75,000 bail. ABC 7 Forgery scam has Los Angeles businesses on high alert One man has been arrested, and another is wanted by police for a forgery scheme bilking businesses in Los Angeles out of at least $10,000, investigators announced. The suspects, identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as Gabriel Garcia Sevilla, 45, and Rafael Gomez Zepeda, 42, were captured on a check-cashing store’s surveillance cameras in February attempting to cash a counterfeit check, detectives said in a news release. Recognizing the checks were counterfeits, the store clerk called police, leading to the arrest of Sevilla. Zepeda, according to police, fled the area but has since been positively identified and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. Detectives say that between Nov. 2024 and Feb. 2025, the duo has victimized several other check-cashing businesses in the Hyde Park and Jefferson Park communities of L.A., often using the aliases Juan Nabarro and Raul Medina. LAPD’s Commercial Crimes Division and Metropolitan Finance Section are alerting other businesses to the forgery scheme and asking for any additional check-cashing stores that may have been victimized by the two men to come forward. KTLA 5 2 dead and 6 injured in Florida State University shooting A gunman opened fire Thursday at Florida State University, killing two people and wounding at least six others, investigators said. Shooter: 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, a current FSU student and the son of a sheriff’s deputy, used his mother’s former service weapon in the shooting, authorities said. Officers shot him after he refused to comply with commands and he is now receiving medical care, said Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell. Response: A campus lockdown was lifted shortly after 3 p.m. ET, but classes and events were canceled for the remainder of the week. FBI agents were on the scene. Updates take time: Compiling accurate and thorough information on an active shooting takes time. Reporters are working to piece together the details from eyewitness accounts, authorities and other sources. Associated Press NYPD gang sweep leads to 20 indictments in Bronx shootings Nearly two dozen members of a notorious Bronx gang with an “absolute disregard for human life” have been indicted for numerous shootings and a homicide, officials announced Thursday. Members of the “800 YGs” gang, which has terrorized the Crotona section of the Bronx for years, are responsible for “14 separate shootings, including one homicide, two non-fatal shootings, and 11 more incidents where shots were fired but no one was struck,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference alongside Mayor Adams and Bronx DA Darcel Clark. “But let’s be clear, that doesn’t mean no one was in danger. Both of these shootings occurred in broad daylight. In one case, six rounds were fired at a city bus as people were getting off. In another, bullets flew just feet from a family standing on the sidewalk with two small children. This is indiscriminate violence. It’s an absolute disregard for human life and for this gang it ends today,” Tisch said. Of the 20 800 YGs indicted, 17 are in custody and the other three are being hunted, she added. The investigation, which spanned two and a half years, was spearheaded by the gun violence suppression division, an elite unit of detectives that specializes in using surveillance technology to identify and apprehend criminals. “Throughout this investigation, we took nearly half of the known members of this gang off the street. In this one case, it’s how precision police work gets done, and it’s another reminder of why calls to abolish this tool by some in the City Council are so dangerous,” Tisch said. MyNewsLA 9 injured in violent San Fernando Valley 3-vehicle crash A violent multi-vehicle crash in the San Fernando Valley Thursday night left at least nine people injured, two of them seriously, officials announced. Details are limited and it’s unclear at this point exactly how the three-car crash happened, though crews with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene in the 13300 block of Roscoe Boulevard just after 9 p.m. on reports of the crash, authorities said in a news release. Aerial footage over the scene captured by Sky5 showed a heavy presence of first responders and an area spanning both sides of the roadway cordoned off. Two of the vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage and were positioned on either side of the street. A third vehicle, a white van in the middle of the road, showed minor damage and appeared to have one of the other vehicle’s front bumpers underneath its front end. In footage of the scene captured on the ground and posted to the Citizen App, a large debris field could be seen scattered on the road surrounding one of the vehicles. KTLA 5 An audit of L.A.’s program to fix deadly streets outlines its many failures Nearly a decade ago, Los Angeles leaders launched Vision Zero, a program that aimed to eliminate traffic deaths on city streets by 2025. In the years since, the number of people killed in crashes has surged. From 2016 to 2023, the annual death toll rose nearly 29% overall, and pedestrian deaths jumped roughly 54%. Fatal crashes fell last year, but deaths have exceeded 300 in each of the last three years. Thousands more people are severely injured in crashes annually. What went wrong? City officials released a long-awaited audit of the program last week, which outlines myriad missteps that contributed to the failure. Those include a lack of political will from city leaders, poor coordination between departments tasked with improving safety and an absence of accountability to actually follow through on projects and goals. “Insufficient support from the Mayor’s Office and City Council Districts has at times limited the effectiveness of Vision Zero Program delivery,” the audit states. “The level of oversight of the Vision Zero initiative diminished over time and so has the level of enthusiasm at City Hall.” Los Angeles Times Rams' draft headquarters to be at LAFD Air Operations base to honor first responders to wildfires The Los Angeles Rams will make their selections in the upcoming NFL draft from the Los Angeles Fire Department's Air Operations base in Van Nuys to honor the first responders who stopped the deadly wildfires that ravaged Southern California earlier this year. The Rams are converting a room in the Air Operations complex to serve as the draft headquarters for general manager Les Snead and coach Sean McVay, while an adjacent hangar will be occupied by scouts and coaches during the three-day draft next week. The LAFD base will remain fully operational during its visit from the Rams. "Drafting from LAFD Air Operations is a powerful reminder of what it means to represent Los Angeles," Rams president Kevin Demoff said. "Since the wildfires devastated our region in January, we have looked to bring LA together to help with the recovery efforts, raise the spirits of those impacted and shine a light on our first responders. We are humbled to partner with LAFD during one of the NFL's biggest moments to express gratitude for those who risk their lives daily to protect our city." CBS 2 Two California Marines who were killed during military exercise in New Mexico are identified Two California Marines, including one from Southern California, who died after an accident in New Mexico on Tuesday while supporting Border Patrol units were identified Thursday by their division. The Camp Pendleton-based Marine Corps’ 1st Marine Division identified the two deceased servicemen as Riverside native Lance Cpl. Albert A. Aguilera and Lance Cpl. Marcelino M. Gamino of Fresno. A third Marine was injured but survived the accident. The three Marines were involved in a crash during a convoy movement near Santa Teresa, N.M., on Tuesday, although their exact activities, the extent of injuries for the third Marine, the causes of death and a timeline of events were not disclosed by the military. The deaths were reportedly the first since thousands more active-duty troops were dispatched to the U.S.-Mexico border as part of President Trump’s effort to clamp down on illegal immigration. The Washington Post reported that the deaths were the result of a vehicle rollover. “The loss of Lance Cpl. Aguilera and Lance Cpl. Gamino is deeply felt by all of us,” Lt. Col. Tyrone A. Barrion said in a statement. “I extend my heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families of our fallen brothers.” Los Angeles Times About the LAPPL: Formed in 1923, the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) represents more than 8,900 dedicated and professional sworn members of the Los Angeles Police Department.
