Skagit County to Accept Glass for Recycling at All Transfer Stations

 

Glass will again be accepted for recycling at Skagit County Transfer Stations starting Friday, April 18, 2025. Glass recycling had been paused for eight months because a regional glass bottle manufacturing facility in Seattle closed, which meant there was no local manufacturer to purchase our recycled glass. A second regional glass recycler in Seattle has since found new markets out of state to sell the glass so they are now able to accept glass from Skagit County.

Glass from households is accepted by residential drop-off at all three transfer stations in the County: Skagit County Recycling and Transfer Station on Ovenell Road, Clear Lake Compactor Site, and the Sauk Transfer Station. There is no charge on recycled household materials at any of the transfer stations. Only mixed colors of jar and bottle glass are accepted. Window pane or auto glass will not be accepted.

Last summer, a regional bottle manufacturer in Seattle went out of business unexpectedly, leading to an abrupt decrease in demand for recycled glass. Typically, recycled glass is remade into glass wine and beer bottles. Industry groups have reported a decline in demand for bottles, which has led to less demand for recycled glass material; however, improvements in the market have created an increased demand for glass.
