Trump's counterterror czar proposes terror charges for political opponents
White House counterterror czar Sebastian Gorka, a British-Hungarian alt-right radical who became a US citizen himself in 2012, said today that Americans who are not on board with the Trump administration’s draconian immigration policy are “on the side of terrorists." Seriously. "It's really quite that simple," Gorka said on Newsmax. "We have people who love America, like the president, like his Cabinet, like the directors of his agencies, who want to protect Americans. And then there is the other side, that is on the side of the cartel members, on the side of the illegal aliens, on the side of the terrorists." He didn't stop there, of course, going on to claim this is tantamount to "aiding and abetting" — which he called a crime under federal law. So basically, anyone who criticizes the president is a terrorist. It's fascism with a capital F.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Brian Tyler Cohen clashes with Tomi Lahren in fiery debate
During a contentious debate on Fox LA's "The Issue Is," Cohen and Lahren sparred over the Trump regime's wildly unconstitutional assault on the fundamental rule of law, as the right-wing commentator dutifully carried Donald's very dirty water and said Republican voters were just fine with simply abandoning due process, thank you very much.

Deb Haaland vows to protect us from Trump and his billionaire allies
Deb Haaland for Governor: Deb Haaland has fiercely fought for justice and delivered results for working people throughout her life, be it as an organizer, from the halls of Congress, or as Secretary of the Department of the Interior. She will always refuse to sit idly by while Trump and his un-elected billionaire allies unleash chaos across the country and give polluters free rein to destroy our pristine wilderness. We can help Deb fight back against Trump by electing her to the governor’s office in New Mexico. Will you chip in to help this fierce public servant answer the call to service once again?
Rubio threatens to "move on" from Ukraine-Russia talks "within days" if no progress seen: "We have other priorities"
Other priorities apparently include: abandoning due process and disappearing deportees to international gulags, declaring war on the judicial branch, walking away from decades-long alliances and treaties with friends and allies, propping up war criminals, abandoning highly successful disease prevention programs in impoverished parts of the world, and tanking the global economy with a futile tariff war that will likely send the country into a deep recession. To be fair, the Trump administration does have its hands full. Backsliding into fascism takes a village of ideological idiots!

Appeals court calls Trump's defiance "shocking" in scathing ruling
The 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals flatly rejected the Trump administration’s attempt to appeal a court order directing it to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal US resident with a wife and family in Maryland. "The government asserts that Abrego Garcia is a terrorist and member of MS-13. Perhaps, but perhaps not. Regardless, he is still entitled to due process. If the government is confident of its position, it should be assured that position will prevail in proceedings to terminate the withholding of removal order. Moreover, the government has conceded that Abrego Garcia was wrongly or 'mistakenly' deported. Why then should it not make what was wrong, right?" Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson — a conservative Ronald Reagan appointee — wrote Thursday. He held nothing back, adding: "It is difficult in some cases to get to the very heart of the matter. But in this case, it is not hard at all. The government is asserting a right to stash away residents of this country in foreign prisons without the semblance of due process that is the foundation of our constitutional order. Further, [the Trump administration] claims in essence that because it has rid itself of custody that there is nothing that can be done. This should be shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear,” Wilkinson wrote. Hear, hear.

Maryland Sen. Van Hollen finally meets with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador amid court fight over US return
Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen finally met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador, yesterday, posting a photo of the meeting on Twitter and saying he also called Abrego Garcia’s wife "to pass along his message of love." Abrego Garcia was mistakenly sent to the notorious CECOT Salvadoran prison by the Trump administration in March despite an immigration court order preventing his deportation. The meeting came hours after Van Hollen said he was initially denied entry into the high-security prison while trying to check on Abrego Garcia’s well-being and push for his release. It's refreshing to see a Democrat stand up and actually do something to resist the fascists running roughshod over the Constitution, but it is just a start. We need a LOT more where that came from, please.
FDA making plans to end its routine food safety inspections, sources say
Fans of salmonella, listeriosis, e. coli, and diarrhoea rejoice! The Trump administration announced plans to end routine federal food safety inspections and effectively outsource such efforts to state and local officials, because if there's one thing we definitely need less of as industrial food production and superfarming dominate even more of the US food supply, it's sensible oversight.
Gavin Newsom calls Kilmar Abrego Garcia's disappearance "the distraction of the day"
Weird! We thought the Democratic governor of the most populous state in the country platforming right-wing nationalists and MAGA ideologues on his silly podcast was "the distraction of the day," not an actual constitutional crisis threatening the legitimacy of the United States' judicial branch, but what do we know?
US-born citizen arrested and jailed in Florida as "unauthorized alien"
Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, a 20-year-old US citizen, was locked up in the Leon County Jail on Wednesday, charged with illegally entering Florida as an "unauthorized alien" — even as a supporter waved his US birth certificate in court the next day. Lopez-Gomez was in a car pulled over for speeding and gave his Georgia state ID to the trooper, who then wrote in his report that Lopez-Gomez said he was in the country illegally. Even more disturbingly, the judge acknowledged that Lopez-Gomez was a US citizen but gave him back over to ICE anyway, as the state prosecutor insisted the court lacked jurisdiction over Lopez-Gomez’s release because US Immigration and Customs Enforcement had formally asked the jail to hold him. Lopez-Gomez was eventually released Thursday evening but spent an entire day in jail, for no reason other than speaking Tzotzil, a Mayan language that far predates the United States or any white man's presence on the American continent. What the hell is going on in Florida?

Gunman kills 2, wounds 6 in mass shooting at Florida State University
At least two people were killed and six others hospitalized after a mass shooting by a student at Florida State University in Tallahassee yesterday. Authorities identified the alleged gunman as Phoenix Ikner, the son of a current and longtime Leon County deputy. Sheriff Walter McNeil says the 20-year-old suspect had access to one of the deputy's personal handguns, and it was found at the scene along with a shotgun. The sheriff says the suspect, an FSU student who is in custody, was well-known to the department and had participated in several training programs, including as a member of the department's "youth advisory council." Trump chimed in from the White House, stating, "It's a horrible thing. It's horrible that things like this take place," then immediately pivoted to politicizing the tragedy, assuring his right-wing base that he won't be advocating for any new gun safety legislation and would "always protect the Second Amendment." Wait, where is the "now is not the time" crowd? We thought we weren't supposed to talk politics in the aftermath of tragic and definitely preventable mass shootings?
