Did you know that Virginia is the last state in the South to have full access to reproductive healthcare?

That is why our awesome partner organization called Roe Your Vote Virginia is working to pass a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion access into the state’s constitution, and we want to help make that happen.

During the 2023 General Assembly elections, Roe Your Vote Virginia led the fight to elect pro-choice candidates and advance reproductive freedom in their state. In 2025, we’re working together to protect Virginia’s pro-choice majority in the General Assembly and enshrine abortion access once and for all.

The first step to passing a constitutional amendment to protect abortion access has already happened: The General Assembly voted on Senate Joint Resolution No. 1 (SJ 1) and House Joint Resolution No. 1 (HJ 1). Now we’re onto step two: This November, Virginia voters will head to the polls to elect a Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and the entire House of Delegates. The outcome of these elections will be critical in determining the future of reproductive rights in the state – and a possible healthcare access point for women across the entire southern region of America.

Here is why this is so important: If pro-choice leadership remains in control of the House of Delegates, they will take another vote on these bills. If they pass a second time, the amendment will proceed to the final stage, where voters will have the opportunity to vote on the amendment in November 2026.

Without this protection, reproductive rights remain vulnerable to shifting political landscapes and the whims of elected officials who could impose restrictions or outright bans on abortion. We must ensure there are pro-choice women in the room when this vote is happening.
