BREAKING: Earlier this week, the SAVE Act was passed in the House and has moved to the Senate.

If passed, this bill would impose new restrictions making it harder for millions of citizens - especially women - to vote. Specifically, it would require voters to present in person documentation of proof of citizenship such as passports or birth certificates when registering to vote.

As the legislation advanced, several of our moms who serve as Secretaries of State held a press conference to make clear how harmful this bill would be. As Vote Mama Alum and Secretary of State of Vermont Sarah Copeland Hanzas put it, “The SAVE Act is really a dangerous step, and it’s a step in absolutely the wrong direction. Very straight-forward and candid, this bill will disenfranchise women.”

She went on to describe how the bill’s restrictions would disproportionately impact married women, rural voters, and even voters who have lost documents to natural disasters. “They bring out the SAVE Act and cloak it in this rhetoric of election integrity, when what it really does is it pushes women out of the democratic process. And it’s not a coincidence. It’s part of a strategy to make voting harder, to sow distrust in our elections… and to undermine our faith in government itself.”
