News from Congressman Mike Levin

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Dear Neighbor,

It’s been a busy few weeks in Washington, D.C. I’m doing everything I can to support policies that help families in our district, which means opposing cuts to vital programs and arbitrary tariff policies that will drive up costs.

I’m also continuing to speak out against Members of Congress trading stocks, working to ensure no one in our community goes hungry, and standing up to defend Social Security and our veterans.

Here’s just some of what I have been working on for you.

Fighting for Transparency and Accountability

I’ve always supported a stock trading ban on members of Congress. No elected official should use their position for personal profit.

To promote transparency and fight corruption, I helped lead a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson requesting that he call on every member of the House of Representatives to immediately disclose any stock transactions conducted between April 2-9.

During that time, President Trump had conversations with many members of Congress, after which he paused tariffs on most of our trading partners.

Fighting Hunger in Our Community

Rep. Mike Levin discusses funding cuts to food banks with Feeding San Diego CEO Bob Kamensky

The Trump Administration recently cut programs to help food banks, including an initiative to help them purchase locally grown produce. I visited Feeding San Diego to learn how this is impacting our region.

In short, food banks will be forced to find alternative funding or cut back on helping feed the most vulnerable in our community. This is especially harmful at a time when families are increasingly reliant on food banks due to rising grocery prices.

Along with my colleagues in the California delegation, I sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins advocating for funding to be restored.

Pushing Back Against Cuts to VA

According to reporting from CNN, the Trump Administration has plans to fire up to 83,000 employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs, including thousands of VA call center employees who help with medical appointments and delivery of benefits.

In an effort to put a stop to these cuts, I sent a letter to VA Secretary Doug Collins demanding call centers be protected and opposing privatization efforts. Every veteran deserves to be treated with the care and respect they have earned, and any move toward privatization and automation does exactly the opposite.

Demanding Answers for Signalgate

Like many of you, I was deeply troubled that classified information was communicated through a Signal group chat organized by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Signal is a commercial messaging platform that our adversaries have been known to target, and this irresponsible breach compromised the safety of not only those who serve in the military, but all Americans.

Unfortunately, there has been a complete lack of accountability despite this alarming display of recklessness. I’ve called for a bipartisan Congressional investigation, the appointment of a special counsel, and the resignations of those involved. The American people deserve nothing less.
