We're centering Black-led organizations that have been working for years to dismantle white supremacy -- here's one way you can support them Content Warning: This email discusses recent high-profile cases of police murder and brutality.
Indivisibles,
The United States’ history is 400 years of white supremacy, of devaluing Black lives and Black bodies. Most recently, we’ve seen horrifying footage and reports of police officers murdering George Floyd and Breonna Taylor -- just two in a heartbreakingly long list of Black victims of police and state-sponsored violence.
Over the last week and a half, the uprisings across the country have reached a nearly unprecedented scale and scope, with protests and actions in every U.S. state and territory and several countries around the world. The world is watching what the United States will do to keep communities safe from the crisis of police violence.
Like racism, the movement against police brutality, the movement to protect and value Black lives, and the movement to dismantle white supremacy were around long before 2016 and long before Indivisible was a twinkle in anyone’s eye. And frankly, as a new and mostly white-led organization with mostly white supporters, we have a responsibility to center Black voices, and those who’ve been doing the work for years.
One of many ways that we can show up is by funnelling resources directly to Black-led organizations doing the work on the ground to support the uprising and developing strategies and campaigns to advance racial justice. We’ve set up a page where you can do just that -- click here to learn more about the organizations we’re supporting and make a donation to fund their work. 100% of your donations will go straight to these organizations doing work nationwide to combat police brutality and dismantle white supremacy.
These organizations are far from the only groups doing vital and impactful work on the ground, and we encourage you to seek out local efforts in your area to support as well. This Google Doc, put together by Reclaim the Block, is a great resource, and you can find many more on social media. Leaders in your local Indivisible group may also know of organizations doing important work in your area.
Whether you’re donating to a bail fund, delivering supplies for a local action, putting your body on the line at a protest or march, holding leaders accountable for change, having tough conversations with friends and family -- we all have a role to play in mobilizing for Black liberation. There is no time to wait.
In solidarity, Indivisible Team
P.S. -- This is the first in what we hope will be a series of “IndiGIVEable” emails where we reach out asking you to support other deserving organizations. We do this because we know we are part of a broader movement, and we frankly aren’t always the right people to lead particular work and we want to support the people who are.
