We’re in a crisis moment for the future of free speech. The federal government is threatening media outlets over their editorial decisions, social media platforms are being investigated for how they moderate users’ online speech, and funding has been stripped (or threatened) for essential news services, press freedom groups, universities, research labs and other cultural institutions because they purportedly express views disfavored by the Administration.

CDT’s Free Expression team has been quickly responding — and we need your support for the work ahead.

Following the President’s Executive Order entitled “Restoring Freedom of Speech and Ending Federal Censorship,” CDT was swift to point out how the Administration’s actions violate the principles of free speech. Since then, we’ve been:

Underscoring the importance of maintaining foreign aid that sustains global internet freedom and anti-censorship programs;
Opposing the FCC’s steps to threaten broadcasters’ licenses because of their editorial decisions;
Resisting the politicized bullying of NPR and PBS;
Emphasizing the extraordinary concerns raised by targeting immigrants, universities, museums, philanthropic foundations, and other diverse voices across our society based on First Amendment-protected expression;
Highlighting the problems and inaccuracies of “social media monitoring” as a tool for immigration and law enforcement; and
Preparing to defend Section 230 and social media companies’ right to make content moderation choices not as a shield for Big Tech, but as the tool that empowers users to speak and share their views freely on the internet.

Free speech is integral to CDT’s core values; it’s at the heart of our work. The resources needed to meet the First Amendment challenges ahead will require new, increased commitments from individual donors. We are proud that over 50% of our funds come from foundations, yet our sustained growth will depend on individuals like you.
