A Reprehensible Attack on a Political Leader

This week, the nation was shaken by a disturbing attack on a high-profile public official. After an evening where Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family celebrated Passover at their residence, they were woken at 2 a.m. by state police who evacuated them after an arson attempt that set fire to the building. No one was injured, the fire was put out and a suspect is in custody, but the implications remain frightening.

According to information obtained by law enforcement, this was not a random act of violence, but a targeted attack motivated by the Governor’s perceived views on the Israel-Palestine conflict. If true, this represents a clear act of domestic terrorism and extremism that we must forcefully push back against.

We call on community leaders across the spectrum to denounce this attack and work together to root out antisemitism and extremism in all its forms. Click below to read more about the attack from:

Time Honors ADL: This week, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt was named to the annual TIME100 list of the most influential people in the world. This is a powerful statement of the impact ADL is making in the fight against antisemitism by launching new innovations, leaning into litigation, tracking and disrupting incidents, and combating hate on many fronts through many channels. The honor has Jonathan’s name on it, but it is a recognition that he shares with you and everyone in the ADL community as we Fight Hate for Good together. We also congratulate other honorees, including Israel’s Noa Argamani, who after being rescued from captivity in Gaza has become an important voice for the
remaining hostages.

ADL Guide to the End of the College Year: As colleges and universities across the country move towards the end of the school year, this means that the season for commencement ceremonies and other major events is coming up. They should not be overshadowed by disruptions, threats or discriminatory targeting of any student speakers. We’ve seen this happen before. Last year, commencement ceremonies across the country were marred by antisemitic protests, walkouts and disruptions aimed at silencing Jewish voices or derailing the events altogether. We must not see a repeat in 2025. ADL has provided a series of guidelines to help school leaders prevent disruptions and support Jewish
students.

Honoring Companies for their Values: JLens, a Registered Investment Advisor and affiliate of ADL, has announced the recipients of its 2024 Corporate TOV Awards. The TOV Awards, whose name reflects the Hebrew word for “good,” were created to annually recognize and honor 18 companies that rank highly and outperform peer companies according to JLens’ Jewish values scorecards, with criteria that measure combating antisemitism and hate, support for Israel and Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World). MAKING PROGRESS WITH ADL

Taking on Global Antisemitism: Last week, ADL partnered with the Polish Consulate General in New York — in their current capacity as rotating president of the European Union Council — to deliver a Global 100 briefing to EU Consuls General in NY. The ADL Global 100 is our study of levels of antisemitic sentiments in countries around the world. Over 15 Consuls attended the briefing and engaged in hours of discussion on the policy implications of the study and best practices to be implemented in order to curb antisemitic attitudes in their respective countries.

Among the countries represented were France, Ireland, Lithuania, Sweden, Cyprus, Romania, Belgium, Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Greece, Germany and Austria. ADL’s Aykan Erdemir and Alexander Rosemberg, and Sarah Feldman from Ipsos led the discussion along with Polish Consul General Mateusz Sakowicz.

Demand that the White House protect funding that helps keep Jewish students safe. The Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which provides federal funding to help synagogues and community organizations protect themselves against extremist threats, is currently frozen. So, some centers of Jewish campus life must divert their limited budgets away from Shabbat dinners and cultural events to pay for basic safety measures. Join ADL in urging the White House to protect funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.
