Voting is an essential American freedom; however, an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last month is threatening that freedom for millions of Americans. President Trump’s recent executive order on voting is an illegal and unconstitutional attempt to take control of our elections and a clear violation of the separation of powers. If enforced, it would prevent millions of Americans from registering to vote.
Congress — not the president — has the power to pass laws that set national voting standards and override state laws governing federal elections. The Constitution does not give the president any role in setting election rules.
