Bioethics Chats: I. Glenn Cohen
"Interest in psychedelics is bipartisan"

Cohen, a Hastings Center Fellow, is the James A. Atwood and Leslie Williams Professor of Law; Deputy Dean of Harvard Law School; and Faculty Director of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology & Bioethics at Harvard. Last year, he became an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. He talked with Vardit Ravitsky about his most recent research on the ethical use of psychedelics and some surprising things he’s learned, including that interest in psychedelics is bipartisan. He also shared what he does for fun. (Spoiler alert: who knew law professors play video games!) Read the chat and watch a clip.

Studies show a steady decline in health workers' trust in organizations, and this decline is significantly associated with a reduction in patient trust in clinicians. This summit, cosponsored by The Hastings Center and featuring research scholar Carolyn Neuhaus, will examine the problem and present a series of case studies that may hold promise for rebuilding health workers' trust and, by extension, patient trust. The event will take place at George Washington University. Learn more and register.

Financial Toxicity Identified in Cancer Trials
Article highlights "hidden costs" of participating in early studies

Among the many burdens cancer patients face is financial toxicity, the high out-of-pocket costs of medical treatment and resulting financial burdens and medical debt. Little known, however, is the financial toxicity to patients who volunteer for early-phase cancer clinical trials – increased costs of travel and other expenses, and the negative impact these financial burdens can have on research participants’ health outcomes and quality of life. An article in Ethics & Human Research argues that researchers should tell prospective participants about the risk of financial toxicity to “demonstrate that they respect their patients’ autonomy, seek to protect them from preventable harm, and ensure the participants’ well-being takes precedence over the needs of the research.” Read more.
