Remember 2018, when Stacey Abrams had to file a lawsuit because of rampant voter suppression by her opponent (who was the acting Secretary of State and head of Georgia elections)?
At best, what is happening today is due to total incompetence -- and our Governor and Secretary of State have to answer for their repeated failures in election administration. At worst, it is another example of the systemic voter suppression in America.
People power is the only way we can rise up and stop this, and demand our leaders stop disenfranchising American citizens. We need 10,000 signatures today before polls close: Will you sign on to our petition to end voter suppression in Georgia and all around the country?
We have to fight to make sure voter suppression in Georgia and around the country ends, but we’ve already seen that the leader of today’s Republican Party -- President Donald Trump -- is full steam ahead. Trump has repeatedly called to stop voting by mail during a pandemic, because he thinks it might increase voter turnout -- it’s that cynical and nakedly partisan.
And there’s no doubt the issue of voter suppression is more relevant than ever today, with numerous examples of our rights under attack.
This issue is even at stake in my re-election race. Here’s what civil rights hero Rep. John Lewis called my opponent Karen Handel's brand of voter suppression while she was Georgia's Secretary of State from 2007-2010: “An attempt to take us back to another dark period in our history when people were denied access to the ballot box -- simply because of their race or nationality.”
John -- every eligible American deserves the same right to vote that is fundamental to our democracy -- no matter what their race, creed, or national origin. Sign on here to demand an end to voter suppression in Georgia and across the Country »»
