U.S. Metro Areas Experienced Population Growth Between 2023 and 2024
The population of U.S. metro areas collectively continued to increase in 2024, growing slightly faster than the nation, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.
The number of people residing in the nation’s 387 metro areas rose by nearly 3.2 million (1.1%) between 2023 and 2024, slightly outpacing U.S. population growth over the same period (1.0%).
As of July 1, 2024, nearly 294 million people (about 86% of the total U.S. population) lived in a metro area.
Across the United States, many metro areas are experiencing population growth, as approximately 88% gained population between 2023 and 2024.
