New Pennsylvania Project

Fellow activist,

Trump is a step closer to openly defying the courts and deporting people without due process. This is a scary time in America.

In case you missed it, due to an “administrative error,” the Trump regime has deported Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to a dangerous and violent mega-prison in El Salvador.  According to the New York Times, Garcia is a 29-year-old father of three, living in Maryland with protected legal status.

Here’s what’s happening: The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously determined that the government must “facilitate” his return to the United States. However, Trump is indicating that he has no intention of following this order. Instead, he has allied himself with President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, who self-describes himself as the world’s “coolest dictator,” and has stated, “Of course I’m not going to do it,” when asked if he will return Garcia home.

As Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at Georgetown University, stated to the NYT, “the idea that ‘the government can disappear people to a foreign country with no due process and no responsibility for what happens next’” amounts to “a rule-of-law crisis.”

If Trump gets away with sending someone, regardless of their citizenship status, to a foreign prison without recourse, the impact could be devastating. This is made abundantly clear as he has floated the idea of sending American citizens “convicted of violent crimes” to the prison in El Salvador, and his Attorney General, Pam Bondi, is allegedly studying the proposal.

As the Trump regime works to chip away at our democracy and push us closer to a constitutional crisis, it has never been more critical that our state and federal courts remain fair and independent. The independence of the judiciary should be protected –  especially from the executive branch.

This is urgent: An angel donor has agreed to match all donations up to $50,000 to NPP between now and the end of the month. With make-or-break judicial elections happening in Pennsylvania this year, we need your help to hit that goal. Will you help us continue to fund our voter education and mobilization work and defend our state from the crisis happening in Washington by pitching in a contribution of $25 today?

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Donate $25 = It becomes $50 Donate $50 = It becomes $100 Donate $100 = It becomes $200 Donate $250 = It becomes $500 Donate $1000 = It becomes $2000 MAKE YOUR DONATION TWICE AS POWERFUL →

Thank you,

Team NPP
