50 years ago, the first Pride march was held to commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Since then, June has been a month to take time to honor and celebrate the contributions and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community.
We've come far as a nation over the years, but it's clear we have a long way to go. To this day people face discrimination simply because of who they love or how they identify. Equality may be the law in Washington State, but 27 states still do not have any statewide laws protecting people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations.
Given the national focus on racial justice, it is important to also note that transgender black women are at exceptionally high risk of discrimination, violence, and death.
No matter who you love or how you identify, everyone deserves the same rights and protections. That's why I was proud to help pass the Equality Act last year to explicitly outlaw any discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity nationwide.
Over a year later, Mitch McConnell is still blocking a vote on this vital piece of legislation in the Senate. That is unacceptable. If you agree it's past time equal rights were guaranteed for all, add your name to join me in demanding McConnell call for a vote on the Equality Act in the Senate →
I will always stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, and will continue to fight for protections to ensure Washington State -- and our country -- is a welcoming and inclusive home for all.
