Join us as we celebrate 80 years since Victory in Europe Day

Let’s remember, reflect and celebrate together.

Abbi-Kaye (Viva la Vintage) will be performing classic wartime hits at Tommyfield Market on VE Day, Thursday 8 May, at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.

Visit Spindles (outside Next) to sign our commemorative card and leave a message of thanks.

Tommyfield Market and Yorkshire Street will be decked out in red, white and blue bunting to bring the celebrations to life.

And we’ll be lighting up the Civic Centre for the very last time as a tribute to those who served and as a goodbye to a local landmark.

Literacy project is giving young children in Oldham the best start

More than 170 children are currently taking part in the Making it REAL (Raising, Early, Achievement in Literacy) programme, funded by Oldham Council Family Hubs, from 22 schools and settings across Oldham.

Children and families take part in a series of home visits and literacy events throughout the year.

At Beever Primary School in St Mary's, children have been learning about minibeasts and they hosted an Ugly Bug Ball as one of the literacy events.

Activities were set up around the room linked to early literacy development and children dressed up for the occasion as various bugs and insects.

Jasmina Gawkowska praised the difference the programme has made for her four-year-old daughter Eliana Coffey.

"It's brilliant, It's really nice to see that she has got such a good rapport wit her teachers," she said.

"She's better behaved and she's making progress with her writing and reading. I would definitely recommend it."

Work to begin on £12.9m Visitor Centre and and Forestry Skills Centre

We’re set to begin construction on the exciting new Visitor Centre and Forestry Skills Centre at Northern Roots, a key part of the project to transform 160 acres of green space in the heart of Oldham into the UK’s largest urban farm and eco-park.

The council has secured £12.9 million from the national government’s Town Deal and Levelling Up Fund Round 2 to deliver this transformative next phase.

The work marks the next stage of the council project, which has been developed in close partnership with the Northern Roots charity and has already gained regional and national recognition.

Set in the beautiful woodland at the northern end of the site, the Visitor Centre will feature a café, shop, production kitchen, exhibition and performance space, as well as learning and meeting facilities.

Meanwhile, the Forestry Skills Centre, will provide residents with vocational learning opportunities linked to a range of technical and land-based skills and qualifications.
