Friend,
Fifty years ago, America celebrated its first Pride Month, dedicating June to honor the work and sacrifices of the LGBTQ+ people who have fought against injustice and oppression in their communities.
Protests have always been a part of our history and our progress -- and this anniversary of the Stonewall Inn raids feels especially meaningful, arriving at a time when millions of people are demanding the equal rights and protections owed to Black Americans.
This month, I encourage you to remember past contributions to LGBTQ+ civil rights and support the ongoing struggle for justice. We have a duty to uplift LGBTQ+ stories and voices, especially those in communities of color.
If you’d like to learn more about the LGBTQ+ rights movement, check out organizations like the Human Rights Campaign, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and the Equality Federation.
If you’re interested in supporting work to amplify and empower LGBTQ+ voices, consider donating to an organization like The LGBTQ Victory Fund, which works to elect LGBTQ+ candidates to offices across the country, or The Trevor Project, an organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention resources for at-risk LGBTQ+ youth.
Our founding documents declare that we are all created equal, but we still have work to do to ensure that every person in our country is given the same rights and opportunities. To my LGBTQ+ friends, neighbors, and colleagues: we stand with you and will fight alongside you, not just in June, but every all year.
May this Pride Month be one filled with hope,
Josh
