During his first term, Donald Trump stacked the federal judiciary with right-wing ideologues – judges who went on to chip away at abortion rights, block protections for voters, and side with corporate interests over the public good (among other harmful decisions).
Now, House Republicans are trying to let him do even more damage by allowing him to fill 22 new district court judgeships with MAGA loyalists.
It’s called the JUDGES Act (H.R. 1702) – and it was originally a bipartisan bill designed to address rising caseloads in our federal courts. The Senate passed it unanimously, well before the elections, when it was not known who would be the president and which party would control the Senate.
But House Republicans blew that up. They refused to act until after the election – after Trump won, and after they secured control of the Senate. Now, they’re exploiting the bill to give Trump the chance to fill 22 of the 66 new lifetime judgeships with MAGA loyalists who would put Trump’s interests above the rule of law.

Rep. Jamie Raskin and Rep. Hank Johnson tried to preserve the bill’s original intent by supporting an amendment to delay implementation until after the next presidential election. Committee Republicans blocked it, proving this was never about fairness – it’s about power.
This is no accident. During the Biden administration, Republicans kept key judicial seats open by refusing to cooperate. Now they’re creating new judgeships in some of those same states – just in time for Trump to fill them with loyalist judges who could entrench MAGA power for decades.
It’s a blatant power grab dressed up as judicial reform. And we can’t let it pass without a fight.
