Hundreds of international students and scholars in the United States are suddenly being targeted for deportation — some detained without warning, stripped of their visas, and denied due process.

Some are accused of minor infractions from years ago. Others are being targeted for their family members' associations or social media posts. Some were never given a reason at all. But there’s one thing many of them have in common: they spoke out. They disagreed with the Trump administration. And now they’re being punished.

A professor returning from a family trip was deported despite legal status. A grad student on a fellowship was pulled off the street and detained by plainclothes agents. And hundreds of international students — many of whom have no criminal record at all — have suddenly found their legal status stripped away.

This isn’t just a crackdown. It’s a dangerous warning of what’s to come. It shows that Trump is using immigration enforcement as a tool for political retaliation.

Trump has already shown us how far he’s willing to go. In the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia — a father of four who was accidentally deported despite a judge’s order — the Trump administration refused to correct its mistake. Even after admitting the deportation never should have happened, they refused to bring him home. That same disregard for the courts, for basic constitutional protections, and for human dignity is now being turned on students and academics.

We cannot allow this to go any further. Here’s what Congress must do:

* Launch a full investigation into politically motivated deportations
* Demand transparency from ICE and DHS
* Hold public hearings and enforce compliance with the law
