I'm writing to you today with a sense of urgency that I haven't felt since I began my journalism career. As executive editor of The
American Prospect, I've witnessed firsthand how independent journalism serves as a crucial xxxxxx against the erosion of our democratic institutions. Today, that role is more vital than ever.

The winds of authoritarianism are blowing stronger. We're seeing alarming signs of a coordinated effort to silence critical voices and undermine the very foundations that support progressive causes. As Bob Kuttner presciently wrote in our August 2024 issue, a weaponized IRS could attack the very foundations of the progressive movement [link removed].

Just yesterday, Trump threatened the tax status of Harvard University because they refused to cave to his demands [link removed].

At The American Prospect, we've been tracking these developments with growing concern. Our reporters are documenting the systematic dismantling of regulatory protections
[link removed], the targeting of civil servants, and the increasing concentration of power in the hands of a small oligarchy. We're connecting dots that others miss, exposing the networks of influence that operate behind the scenes.

At the same time, we're witnessing a growing movement that is fearlessly opposing the litany of abuses. As I wrote yesterday, Trump needs to break everything fast because he won't have the ability to do so for long. And he knows it. That foundation is rickety, and people power can upend it [link removed].

We cannot do this work alone. We need to build our base of reader support in order to weather the coming storm. Political movements require media attention to thrive. Democracy depends on independent outlets to hold truth to power and expose abuses.

We do not have deep-pocketed billionaires to rely on for support. Corporate advertising will not fund the type of deep investigative work we must do.
That's why I'm asking for your support today. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by May 1st, and we have a long way to go. These funds will directly support our journalists as they investigate corruption, expose abuses of power, and hold the powerful accountable.

We're in it for the long haul. The American Prospect has been fighting for progressive values for over three decades, through administrations both friendly and hostile. But to continue this fight, we need you, a reader who understands that democracy requires an informed citizenry, to support us.

Will you stand with us? Make a tax-deductible donation today. [link removed]

Thank you for being part of our community of readers. Together, we can protect
the institutions and values that make a just society possible.
