Dear John,
Florida ranks 50th out of 51 states (including D.C.) for LGBTQ+ safety—almost last place. In a state known for silencing queer voices, a group of South Florida students did the opposite. They spoke up, unapologetically.
With the support of an It Gets Better: Changemakers grant, these students launched Taboo Talk—a student-created video series tackling topics like body image, sexual health, LGBTQ+ rights, and the joy of being seen for who you really are. The pilot episode, along with a special edition filmed at the Florida AIDS Walk, is just the beginning. The team plans to expand the series and make it available to GSAs and classrooms across the country.
“This project taught me the importance of loving myself so I can help others. I know that somewhere, another queer student will feel understood, represented, and uplifted because of what we’ve created. That thought gives me tremendous joy,” said David, one of the students involved with creating Taboo Talk.
These students show what’s possible when LGBTQ+ youth are trusted to lead, create, and connect.
