Dear Friends,

This week NRCAT’s Justice Webinar Series during June’s Torture Awareness Month continues on Thursday with a panel discussion with young people leading the push for criminal justice reform. Then on Friday join me for a one-on–one conversation with Michelle Daniel (Jones), a NYU Doctoral Student and Board Chair of Constructing Our Future, a reentry alternative for women that was created by incarcerated women in Indiana.

Thursday, June 11, 4pm-5pm EDT: Youth Leading the Way on Criminal Justice Reform
Young people are not “the problem,” but are at the center of solutions. They are leading in ways the country has never seen before – from taking to our streets demanding justice in the present moment to advocating against racially-biased criminal justice policies and practices that impact them more than others. Join us this Thursday as we hear directly from young people leading this change and advocates who work to protect the rights of our young people. Register for the June 11th webinar.

Speakers:
• Hernan Carvente Martinez, National Youth Partnership Strategist | Youth First Initiative
• Alyssa Beck, Advisor, Advocacy Specialist | Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center
• Xavier McElrath-bey, Senior Advisor & National Advocate | Campaign for Fair Sentencing of Youth
• Ishale, Youth Advocate, Juveniles 4 Justice |  Juvenile Law Center

Friday June 12, 2pm-3pm EDT: Constructing Our Future: A Fireside Chat with Michelle Daniel (Jones)
This program is the first of three Fireside Chats with Johnny Perez, the Director of NRCAT’s U.S. Prisons Program and advocacy leaders working to end mass incarceration.

This Friday, Johnny speaks with Michelle Daniel (Jones), a NYU Doctoral Student and Board Chair of Constructing Our Future, a reentry alternative for women that was created by incarcerated women in Indiana. Michelle and Johnny are both members of the Urban Institute’s Prison Research Innovation Initiative (PRIN) Advisory Board, an initiative seeking to infuse prisons with research, evidence, transparency, and innovation to promote the health and well-being of people who work and live there. Please register HERE.

VIDEO: Watch "The Truth About Race & Justice" Webinar
If you missed last week’s conversation on Race and Justice in the U.S. with four advocates who described how their past experience in prison and solitary confinement informs their views of the current state of politics and racial justice policy in the U.S. please see it HERE and share with your friends and family.

We look forward to sharing space with you all this week,
Johnny Perez
Director, U.S. Prisons Program
