Dear MoveOn member,
Today, during an in-person meeting at the Oval Office, President Donald Trump and El Salvador President Nayib Bukele doubled down on their refusal to bring home Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal resident who the Trump administration mistakenly deported last month, citing an “administrative error”.1
Kilmar, a longtime Maryland resident and father of three children, was wrongfully deported to a notorious megaprison in El Salvador despite having clear deportation protections from a U.S. immigration judge.2 Since then, a lower court has ordered his return, and the Supreme Court in a 9-0 ruling determined the Trump administration must facilitate his arrival back. But instead, the Trump administration is ignoring these court orders, baselessly smearing Kilmar as a “terrorist,” refusing to right their wrong.3
We can't allow our government to disappear anyone they want to foreign prisons with no recourse or accountability. This is a terrifying display of lawlessness, slipping us even further toward authoritarian rule.
Will you add your name to the petition to demand that the Trump administration do everything in its power to bring Kilmar home?
Kilmar is one of more than 250 immigrants illegally deported without evidence, trials, or due process as part of Trump’s $6 million deal with the Salvadoran government to disappear deportees into El Salvador’s megaprison, CECOT.4
Under this corrupt agreement, Trump is paying President Bukele to imprison deportees, using our taxpayer dollars to pay the Salvadoran government to cage immigrants, many with no criminal convictions, under the false label of gang affiliation. Now, during President Bukele’s visit to the White House, Trump is trying to expand his dangerous deportation pipeline, condeming even more people to torture and isolation inside CECOT.
Experts are already sounding the alarm about CECOT.5 Former State Department official Charles Blaha warned of “torture, and cruel, degrading, and inhumane treatment and punishment” at the facility.6 It’s disgusting that the U.S. is funding egregious acts of human rights violations. Nobody should be subject to that kind of environment—and it’s horrifying to imagine Kilmar, an innocent person, detained there indefinitely.
Selling human lives for political points is not immigration policy and won’t make us safer. Despite court rulings exposing the illegality of these deportations, Trump is doubling down, using innocent people like Kilmar as pawns to fuel his mass deportation agenda.
This deportation racket is endangering lives and shredding the most basic principles of justice and human rights. Trump won’t stop with illegally deporting immigrants to El Salvador—and the erosion of due process should be alarming to every individual in this country.
Click here to sign the petition condemning this egregious disregard for our civil rights, and to demand Kilmar be brought back home immediately. Then share with three friends to make it clear we won’t be silent in the face of these inhumane human rights violations.
Thanks for all you do.
