Dear John,
As Mayor of Hoboken, I initiated the first city lawsuit against Big Oil in New Jersey. Why? Because our residents shouldn’t bear the full cost of climate disasters exacerbated by corporate greed and deception.
Climate change isn’t a future threat—it’s happening right now. In our district, we’re already living with the consequences: more frequent, heavy flooding events and the massive costs associated with investment in city infrastructure to protect our homes and neighborhoods.
This is why Katie Brennan and I are calling on New Jersey lawmakers to immediately pass the Climate Superfund Act. This bill would make fossil fuel companies—who knowingly contributed to the climate crisis—pay their fair share to fund climate resilience projects.
This legislation follows a simple principle: If you break it, you pay for it. We need this now more than ever.
The Trump administration is already moving to cut critical climate programs that cities like Hoboken depend on, including funding that helped build Hoboken’s ResilienCity Park.. Future federal support is at serious risk. New Jersey has to lead.
Now, we need bold, strong leadership in our state legislature to fight against Trump’s chaos and stop oil executives from wrecking the environment and leaving local communities to pick up the pieces.
Thank you for being part of this fight. The Climate Superfund Act is gaining momentum, but we need voices like yours to keep the pressure on.
Chip in here to help us take this message all the way to Trenton.
Sincerely,
Ravi Bhalla
Mayor of Hoboken
