Save the Date: May Day Rally (May 1)
May Day, an annual celebration of the strength of unions, has been celebrated in the United States since the 1880s. The San Francisco Labor Council, the ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition, 50501 SF, and of course, Indivisible SF are working hard to unite on May 1 and show our support for all workers, including those in the immigrant community.
Join us at Civic Center on Thursday, May 1, at 4 PM. More details coming soon!
We are in a constitutional crisis. What are Our MOCs doing about it?
A federal judge had issued a Friday-morning deadline for the Department of Justice to provide a plan to return Kilmar Abrego García, a Maryland resident wrongly abducted and sent to a Salvadoran prison, to the United States. The Supreme Court—the one stacked with Trump appointees!—unanimously affirmed the lower court’s directive. Rather than comply, the DOJ simply argued that meeting the deadline was “impracticable.” These actions reveal a disturbing disregard for the rule of law.
To make matters worse, the administration has already admitted that García’s deportation was an “administrative error.” The Supreme Court has ordered the administration to return him to his family in the US immediately. The constitutional rights that protect Kilmar Abrego Garcia from arbitrary deportation protect all Americans. If the government can bypass courts for him, they can potentially do this for any of us. Today Trump confirmed his administration has no intention to return Abrego Garcia to his family.
Senator Van Hollen of Maryland has requested a meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele while he is in the United States in order to discuss the return of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. Senator Van Hellen has also announced his intent to travel to El Salvador and check on his constituent’s condition if Abrego Garcia is not returned by the end of this week.
We are asking Senator Padilla, Senator Schiff, Representative Pelosi, and Representative Mullin to join Senator Van Hollen’s delegation to El Salvador.
Tell our Members of Congress: Stand up for Kilmar Abrego Garcia and defend the US Constitution.
Keep pushing: No more children living in the streets—Mayor Lurie and our Supes must keep our immigrant families housed!
We must keep pushing to repeal the 90-day eviction policy reinstated in December 2024 by the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH), which is forcing families back onto the streets. We're getting some support from our Supervisors, and now there will be hearing on a resolution to end the evictions.
But we need to keep pushing. This cruel policy must end!
Call Mayor Lurie and your Supervisor and tell them: no more children living in the streets!
A Call to Action from our Media Accountability, Balance and Protection (MAB+) Group: Protect funding for NPR and PBS!
Everyone in the United States has the right to free speech promised under our Constitution. You have this right whether you are an immigrant or a citizen, a reporter or a protester.
Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk, student protesters, have the right to speak their minds. Whether or not Trump or anyone else agrees with them, they have the right to criticize a government’s actions. And yet ICE agents abducted both of them in retaliation for expressing their opinions.
Trump has also been punishing journalists for covering his regime. He’s slashed staff at Voice of America and tried to shut down Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. He’s banned the AP from the White House press pool, and still hasn’t restored full access. In both cases, he's openly defying court orders.
And now, following a sham investigation he ordered on January 30, Trump has turned his sights on NPR and PBS, two stalwarts of domestic public broadcasting in the United States that run on listener/viewer donations, private donations, and Congressional funding. Trump is proposing $1 billion in cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds both broadcasters. At least he’s asking Congress nicely this time!
Tell our Members of Congress: Protect funding for NPR and PBS!
Help the Roxie Theater buy their building!
We’ve happily worked with the Roxie Theater in the Mission on a couple of fronts this year. Last month, the Roxie hosted the showings of “Democracy Noir” that raised money for us. We also rent our current meeting space, 518 Valencia, from them.
Even beyond our own benefit, the Roxie has been a cultural institution in the Mission for roughly a hundred years, having opened under its current name in 1934, and with antecedents going back a bit farther.
Now the Roxie is working to raise $7 million to buy the building it occupies and make various improvements and investments in future operations. As of yesterday, the campaign has about $1.5 million left to go.
You can help either by making a one-time gift or becoming a monthly donor to the Roxie. Learn more at Forever Roxie.
Thank you for coming together to the People’s March!
What a beautiful moment at the People’s March! We joined Alex U. Inn and Juanita More, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, numerous BIPOC and LGBTQIIA+ groups, and so many more to show our strength, unity, and joy.
Indivisible SF volunteers played a big role in keeping the march safe and orderly, and our contingent impressed with signs and tireless chants. Thank you so much for attending and volunteering!
You can find photos of the event in Pro Bono Photo’s albums here and here.
