Fellow activist,

This weekend, we were horrified to learn that Governor Shapiro and his family were targets of an arson attack. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

While the headlines will focus on the damage to his home, the real question is: What kind of world are we actually building?

No residence, title, or security detail can protect us from the truth: Our systems are burning. Literally and metaphorically.

And it’s not just about one house. It’s about all of us.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. popularized the idea of the Beloved Community – a global vision of a world free of discrimination, injustice, and violence. The Beloved Community isn't about saving the elite while the rest of us fend for scraps. It’s about tearing down the walls that divide us and building something rooted in justice.

Yes, this event is tragic. It is unfortunate. But maybe it is also a wake-up call.

It is time to stop patching up broken systems and start imagining something better, together.

In solidarity,

New Pennsylvania Project

The New Pennsylvania Project (NPP) is a voting rights organization with a year-round primary focus on voter registration, civic education, and mobilization. NPP centers historically disenfranchised and often neglected Black, Indigenous and other people of color, immigrant communities and the youth in our work. Through civic engagement, we ensure all eligible voters feel compelled to exercise their freedom to vote in the Commonwealth.
