34,149 individuals died at Chester Zoo in 2024!!!

Dear John,

I am writing to you today to share the devastating findings from a recent study we carried out using Chester Zoo's own data.

Earlier this year, the zoo published their annual 'stock list', showing the numbers of births, transfers and deaths, and the results are heartbreaking.

Zoos record stock lists by law, and this zoo’s ‘numbers’ show that 34,149 individuals died in one year alone.

This is appalling, and we are currently working with journalists to get this information out to the wider public.

The Conservation Myth of Zoos

Of these deaths 56% (19,111 animals) were critically endangered species.

We must put an end to the misinformation spread by zoos, and share with the public the truth about how animals suffer and die in zoos.

Zoo Awareness Weekend 2025

We have conducted this research to coincide with Zoo Awareness Weekend, our weekend of action that runs every Easter. It is the UK's largest coordinated protest of zoos and aquariums, designed to impact zoos at their busiest time of year.

Such a huge number of deaths can be hard to comprehend, but every single one was an individual who felt pain, fear and distress. They do not deserve to die for a lie, nor die for profit making. They deserve to live a life of freedom!
