Truth-telling, not marketing
You’ve probably noticed that the fundamental MAGA strategy for influencing public opinion is to drown out established media outlets by creating a parallel (dis)information universe of social media feeds. Pushing memes, talking points, and in-your-face messaging to tens of millions of people by the hour, their goal is to overwhelm. The movement has no patience for critical thinking and informed reporting. As the U.S. secretary of homeland security put it last month, “We’re not going to let media tell [our] story. We’re going to run a marketing campaign.”
Many of us, however, are nowhere near throwing in the towel on thoughtful journalism. The Christian Century is not in the world to run a marketing campaign. We’re here to inform, challenge, enlighten, and encourage truth-telling. That’s been our purpose for 125 years. People of faith and people friendly to faith find deep meaning in our pages. And with good reason. Our editors and staff put everything they have into making the life of your mind and heart more expansive.
So, if the Century enlarges your life, give something of yourself to allow us to continue this good work. We are a nonprofit ministry creating thoughtful journalism in a time of clickbait, fearmongering, and doomscrolling. When you make your donation today, I want you to feel our immediate gratitude.
Most appreciatively,
Peter W. Marty, Editor/Publisher
