Hi John,
Have you ever changed your last name or do you know anyone who has? Then
guess what – it might get harder to vote.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act) has passed the
House but not the Senate. [ [link removed] ]We can still stop this dangerous voter
suppression bill by telling senators not to vote for it.
If this bill becomes law, millions of Americans are at risk of losing
their right to vote. The law would require citizens to provide proof of
citizenship when registering or re-registering to vote, but state-issued
REAL IDs, drivers licenses, military IDs or tribal IDs would not be
considered valid proof of citizenship. And people who have changed their
names, including married people, would not be able to use their birth
certificate to prove their citizenship.
This law disproportionately affects women (the most common group of people
who have changed their name) and poor people, who are less likely to be
able to afford the specific forms of identification allowed.
It's a poll tax disguised as voter protection, and it must be stopped.
