Hi John – I wanted to give you a super quick update on the progress of the Maine Climate Council. The six Working Groups will present their recommendations to the full Climate Council next week, so if you haven’t already, now is the time to sign the petition asking for a bold action plan.

You can also join remotely to hear the Working Groups’ proposed strategies – Register to attend virtual meetings on June 17 (when Buildings, Energy, and Transportation Working Groups present) and June 18 (when Natural & Working Lands, Coastal & Marine, and Community Resilience Working Groups present).

The Climate Council will draw on these recommendations to develop a Climate Action Plan -- and it’s up to us to make sure they draft a strong enough roadmap to reduce carbon pollution, strengthen Maine’s economy, and build healthy, equitable, just communities.

Be well,

John,

It's difficult to see silver linings right now, especially during this public health crisis. But one thing this pandemic has again made clear is that we need leaders who believe in science-based solutions to the challenges we face.

During this pandemic, we've been fortunate to have strong leadership from Gov. Mills, who relies on experts, like Maine CDC Director Nirav Shah, to advise her as she works to slow the spread of the virus while taking a measured approach to protect our economic futures.

We also need leaders who will take the same science-based approaches to solve the other significant challenge facing our state and planet: climate change. Right now, the Maine Climate Council is continuing its work on a Climate Action Plan for our state, and it's up to us to make sure they are drafting a strong enough roadmap to reduce carbon pollution by at least 80% before 2050.

We have to speak out now and ensure that the Council takes bold steps to hit these critical goals while strengthening Maine's economy, reducing air pollution, and building healthy, equitable communities.

In order to reduce carbon pollution by at least 80% before 2050, we are urging the Council to support concrete action steps that:

  • Expand local renewable energy projects and create new, long-lasting clean energy jobs for Maine workers;

  • Deliver safe, clean, and affordable transportation options for moving people and goods throughout the state;

  • Increase the energy efficiency of homes and businesses;

  • Give Maine people, communities, and resource-based industries like farming, forestry, and fishing the tools to become more resilient and promote solutions that will reduce carbon pollution; and

  • Ensure equity by providing solutions that are fair and accessible to all.

A strong and effective Climate Action Plan that lays out a roadmap to a clean energy economy is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a better future for Maine people.

But our leaders need public input and accountability from us today because all Mainers deserve clean, safe, and healthy communities. Join us to urge the Maine Climate Council to adopt a bold climate plan. Click here to sign the petition.

Thank you for speaking out,

-Kathleen
