Yesterday in the Oval Office, Donald Trump explicitly stated that he wanted to send American citizens to an El Salvador concentration camp and told the Salvadoran president that he should build five more prisons to fit all the “homegrown” American citizens Trump would be sending.

If you were waiting for a moment when Donald Trump would cross the Rubicon into despotism, this would be it. He is the president for the next four years, there’s nothing we can do about that. But what we can do is flip the House to put an actual check on his lawless administration.

There won’t be some “AHA!” moment in which Trump declares that we are no longer a democracy, but a fascist monarchy under his rule. That’s not happening. What is happening, however, is that Trump and his allies are illegally rendering people to a foreign concentration camp, ignoring the Supreme Court’s 9-0 ruling to bring back a man wrongfully deported, and saying the court has no control over the president’s actions.

By the time they feel confident enough to send American citizens to El Salvador, it will be too late. We must fight back against his regime's lawlessness right now.

Everyone has their method of resistance. Whatever yours is, we need it all right now. We need people in the streets. We need people calling and writing their members of Congress. We need to demonstrate that there are far more of us who want to live in a free country and a democracy than there are of those who want to implement a totalitarian state.

Our priority is re-taking the House with a massive majority. If we flip the House, Democrats will control committees that can investigate and subpoena members of the Trump Administration. And with Democrats in charge, we can roll back the damage Trump has already done and mitigate future damage.

But Democrats need to understand the seriousness of this moment and act like they get it. They need to demonstrate fight. We will be supporting fighters who stand for freedom and democracy in 2026
