John,
Right now, across this country, Black mothers are facing a crisis—and it’s one the healthcare system has ignored for far too long.
This week is Black Maternal Health Week, and we’re raising our voices to say what should have been said all along: Black women and birthing people deserve to live—period.
But the numbers tell a different story:
🔺 Black women in the U.S. are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women—even when controlling for income and education levels.
🔺 80% of these deaths are preventable.
🔺 The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income country—and Black women bear the brunt of it.
These are the statistics of a medical system built on white supremacy that does not value Black life, especially when it comes to Black women’s bodies, pain, and survival.
Hospitals ignore our symptoms. Doctors downplay our pain. Birthing people are left to suffer in silence while white supremacy calls it “standard practice.”
We’re done being silent. And we need your help.
Donate now to support Black-led organizing, reproductive justice, and birth equity work that centers Black women and birthing people.
This week and EVERY DAY, we’re focused on uplifting doulas, midwives, community birth workers, and Black maternal health advocates who are saving lives in spite of a system built to fail us.
Your support fuels that work. It helps fund advocacy, mutual aid for Black families, and campaigns to dismantle the racist institutions that treat our births like battlegrounds.
This is about liberation. This is about life. This is about Black futures that are safe, supported, and sacred from the very beginning.
Chip in anything you can, John. Let’s fight for a world where Black mothers and babies thrive.
In love and resistance,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
