Dear John,

Poverty is a policy choice, and our children are paying the price.

At Children’s Defense Fund, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a nurturing, stable home and pursue a brighter future. Today, we're releasing a new policy brief that shows how an expanded, permanent Child Tax Credit (CTC) could be a game-changer for children and families across the country.

When the CTC was expanded through the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021, it lifted 3.7 million children out of poverty in just six months. The evidence is clear: this policy works. It supports healthy brain development, reduces infant mortality, improves long-term health, and saves public dollars down the line.

So why hasn’t Congress made this permanent?

Our new brief, “Expanded Child Tax Credit as an Anti-Poverty & Child Welfare Prevention Strategy,” created in partnership with Chapin Hall, explores the profound impact of poverty on child development—and how we can break the cycle through thoughtful policy rooted in equity and care.

Our children cannot wait. Join us in calling on Congress to act.
