The Mayor must invest in equitable transit solutions, not AVs

Last Thursday, April 10, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced his decision to permit autonomous vehicles — specifically Waymos — onto Market Street. San Francisco Transit Riders (SFTR), Kid Safe SF, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and Walk San Francisco joined together to denounce this decision and advocate to keep Market Street car-free.

For the past five years, Market Street has been free of private cars, resulting in a far safer corridor, with faster, more efficient transit service. Undoing those successes, the result of two decades of work by city agencies, elected officials, and advocates, moves San Francisco in the wrong direction. It is a step backward to a chaotic, dangerous Market Street that serves no one's purposes, including businesses.

This decision creates a direct competition with Muni on Market St, increases street congestion, and interferes with local transit operator jobs.

SFTR's Community and Policy Manager, Dylan Fabris states, "Mayor Daniel Lurie’s unilateral decision today to allow Waymo free rein on Market Street is dangerous, undemocratic, inequitable, and un-San Franciscan. This plan unfairly benefits Waymo — an under-regulated multibillion-dollar tech corporation — at the expense of the safety and mobility of real San Franciscans."
