John, For the first three months, the Trump administration has been running on fumes, confusion, bluster, and bullying.
So far, their "Flood the Zone" strategy of a rapid fire series of shocking events has kept political opponents off balance, and the American public confused. But recent events may signal that their luck is running out:
* Senator Cory Booker set an all-time record for the length of a filibuster , breaking – fittingly – the previous record set by racist senator Strom Thurmond.
* American voters stood up to Elon Musk's flood of campaign cash, delivering a massive victory in Wisconsin and showing that Republicans are vulnerable even in the deepest red areas.
* The U.S. Senate stood up to Trump and handed him a rare defeat with the support of some courageous Republican senators.
* Every day, Americans become more disgusted by Trump and Musk's inhumanity , both active (the spectacle of cruel and highly questionable deportations) and passive (the carnage spotlighted by the devastating earthquake in Myanmar and America being unable to help because of Trump and Musk's shutdown of USAID).
* Staggering and destructive tariffs have landed a body blow to the economy as many Americans watched their 401k become a "301k." The speed and scale of the damage are calling the question on Trump's economic policies in a way that all but the most deranged MAGA Republicans can understand.
The litany of incompetence, thoughtlessness, and humanitarian catastrophe is unconscionable, and the tragedy of America abandoning its ideals and its role in the world is heartbreaking. Yet this exposes for all to see how bankrupt and incompetent Musk, Trump, and his cronies have become.
The wheels have come off in a spectacular fashion for all to see. Signalgate is only the latest example of the keystone cops character of their administration. There will be more. A lot more.
There is no policy or intentional rationale behind these actions. It's about attention and confusion, and leveraging those to do what they want using any tactics they choose.
These are not partisan issues. These are questions of competence and questions of basic humanity and they present us all with the chance to reassert what we believe in. To strengthen our bonds of community. To be clear about our values and expectations. And most importantly, for us to act with things that we can control in our neighborhood, our government, our families and our business. We don't need to be involved with the Trump regime. There are opportunities within our reach to make a statement and to make a difference right now.
Our solidarity is our strength. I hope we all take advantage of this moment. This time may never come again.
Courage,
Earl
