Don’t Let Trump and Musk Destroy Public Media

Friend,

On Monday, multiple press outlets1 reported that the Trump White House asked lawmakers to claw back nearly $1.1 billion in already-approved funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Among its many services, the CPB provides funding that helps popular local PBS and NPR stations reach tens of millions of Americans. For many people, it’s their only source of local news.

Taking a cue from the Project 2025 playbook,2 the cuts fulfill the White House’s plans to eradicate a free press and instead promote extremist propaganda that serves its political aims.

In other words, this isn’t about government efficiency: This is about government control of the media.

Eliminating public media has long been a dream of Republican officeholders because its coverage holds billionaires, powerful special interests and elected officials accountable — but these efforts have always met strong opposition from people of every political persuasion.

We need journalism that serves the people over private interests, authoritarian agendas and self-serving billionaires. Urge Congress to protect public-media funding. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*

To Members of Congress:

Communities across the country rely on their local public radio and TV stations to provide trustworthy news reporting and a diversity of opinions. In poll after poll, the American public has said it wants more support for public and community media, not less.

President Trump’s request to rescind federal funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting would jeopardize programming that your constituents value.

Reject all efforts to defund public media.

In a healthy democracy — where leadership is truly accountable to the people — we would be investing more in our public-media system: Federal support for public media strengthens democratic institutions and helps people understand the world around them. But Trump and his loyalists want to take another cherished public service away from us.

This is a five-alarm fire for public media and democracy in the United States. Sign our petition now. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*
