John,
Donald Trump is determined to sabotage the IRS so that his billionaire friends can continue to make out like bandits and avoid paying what they owe in taxes.
In fact, during the last year of Trump’s first term—2020—households earning $1 million or more were audited at a lower rate than low-income households receiving the Earned Income Tax Credit.[1]
Thanks to our hard work, Congress invested in the IRS in 2022, allowing the agency to begin cracking down on wealthy and corporate tax evaders. Under former IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, the IRS began auditing 60 massive corporations with over $500 billion in profits, notifying Microsoft that it owed $29 billion in back taxes.[2] These investments in the IRS also allowed the agency to recover over $1.3 billion from millionaire tax cheats in less than a year.[3]
But now, Trump has nominated former congressman Billy Long to lead the IRS. When Long was in Congress, he sponsored legislation that would have abolished the IRS and replaced it with a 30% national sales tax―raising the taxes of low-income and working people and cutting the taxes of millionaires, billionaires, and corporations.[4]
Billy Long is a dangerous nominee who would cause further damage to the U.S. tax system. This Tax Day, send a direct message to the Senate and tell them to reject Billy Long’s confirmation as IRS Commissioner.

Unfortunately, Mr. Werfel resigned on Inauguration Day and was replaced with Doug O’Donnell, a 38-year IRS employee who subsequently resigned in February after refusing to sign a data-sharing agreement with the Department of Homeland Security.[5] The most recent IRS resignations came just last week from acting IRS Commissioner Melanie Krause, the Chief Privacy Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and the Chief Risk Officer who all resigned over a deal that allows the IRS to share tax data on undocumented immigrants with the Department of Homeland Security.[6]
The turmoil at the IRS and the nomination of Billy Long just proves that Donald Trump cares more about letting wealthy tax cheats dodge taxes with impunity while weaponizing the agency to inflict pain and suffering on his perceived enemies and undocumented immigrants who have been paying their fair share in taxes.
We need someone leading the IRS who will act in the best interests of everyday taxpayers, not tax dodging billionaires and multimillionaires. Send a message to the Senate urging them to reject the nomination of Billy Long to lead the Internal Revenue Service.
Thank you for all you do,
