John,
Over the past two weeks, millions of people have stood up and spoken out for justice for Black Americans in cities and towns across the country. Thousands have taken to the streets. And we in Congress heard you, loud and clear.
In direct response to these calls for systemic change to stop police brutality and discrimination against Black Americans, Democrats in the House and Senate have swiftly come together to propose a package of the most sweeping and progressive reforms to policing ever.
Yesterday, Democrats – led by the Congressional Black Caucus – proposed the Justice in Policing Act of 2020 , legislation including a wide-ranging set of reforms to start the creation of real, structural change when it comes to policing in America.
If passed, this bill would:
*
Make
it
easier
to
punish
police
misconduct
and
hold
officers
accountable
through
criminal
charges
and
civil
penalties;
*
Ban
no-knock
warrants
in
drug-related
cases,
like
the
one
that
resulted
in
Breonna
Taylor’s
death;
*
Ban
the
use
of
choke-holds,
like
the
one
that
killed
George
Floyd;
*
Create
a
national
registry
to
track
police
misconduct
and
abuse;
*
Enact
other
structural
and
funding
changes,
and
more.
I’ve joined more than 200 colleagues in Congress in cosponsoring this progressive and comprehensive legislation to force change. In order to get it passed, we need to show Republicans that the American people demand it.

This is a critical moment in the fight against police brutality and reforming policing around the country. We need to capture this momentum, and demand action to save lives and move our country forward.
Thank you,
